Look-Ahead Approaches for Integrated Planning in Public Transportation
نویسندگان
چکیده
In this paper we deal with three consecutive planning stages in public transportation: Line planning (including line pool generation), timetabling, and vehicle scheduling. These three steps are traditionally performed one after another in a sequential way often leading to high costs in the (last) vehicle scheduling stage. In this paper we propose three different ways to “look ahead”, i.e., to include aspects of vehicle scheduling already earlier in the sequential process: an adapted line pool generation algorithm, a new cost structure for line planning, and a reordering of the sequential planning stages. We analyze these enhancements experimentally and show that they can be used to decrease the costs significantly. 1998 ACM Subject Classification G.1.6 Optimization, G.2.2 Graph Theory, G.2.3 Applications

Overview of the Literature on the Transit-Oriented Development to Investigate a Practical Solution for Traffic Congestion in Iran Cities
Expanding public transportation is not enough to solve the urban sprawl problem resulted from an auto-orientation perspective. So urban planning experts paid attention to integrated and coordinated planning of urban development with public transportation, which reached to sustainable urban development. The purpose of this study is to review the researches in transit-oriented development (TOD) a...
متن کاملA Multi-Decompositional Approach to Integration of Planning and Scheduling -- An Applied Perspective
This paper proposes a multi-decompositional approach to integrating planning and scheduling. In many practical domains, planning and scheduling problems are tightly intertwined: the right decomposition for a given goal cannot be determined without considering scheduling. Commonly used approaches suffer from limited look-ahead. The key steps of the proposed approach are: (a) perform and store mu...

متن کاملPublic Transport Ontology for Passenger Information Retrieval
Passenger information aims at improving the user-friendliness of public transport systems while influencing passenger route choices to satisfy transit user’s travel requirements. The integration of transit information from multiple agencies is a major challenge in implementation of multi-modal passenger information systems. The problem of information sharing is further compounded by the multi-l...
متن کاملMeta-heuristic Algorithms for an Integrated Production-Distribution Planning Problem in a Multi-Objective Supply Chain
In today's globalization, an effective integration of production and distribution plans into a unified framework is crucial for attaining competitive advantage. This paper addresses an integrated multi-product and multi-time period production/distribution planning problem for a two-echelon supply chain subject to the real-world variables and constraints. It is assumed that all transportations a...
